The UNESCO Chair on Open Science
Open science is considered by many stakeholders to be the key to a more transparent, inclusive, reliable and participatory science, whose social and economic impacts are maximized. The fundamental mission of the UNESCO Chair on Open Science is to stimulate the adoption of open science practices to make science more accessible, efficient and of better quality.
Research activities
In terms of research, the achievement of this objective is based on the pursuit of a research program based mainly but not exclusively on the following themes and issues:
- Open science practices and their different forms, mainly with regard to access to publications, access to research data as well as peer review processes.
- The advantages and disadvantages of open scientific practices, their disciplinary and socio-demographic determinants as well as the incentives and barriers associated with their adoption.
- The effects of open scientific practices on the quality of research, on the use of knowledge and on society in general.
- The allocation of scientific capital and other internal incentives to the scientific community and the role they can play in the adoption of open science practices.
- The impact of open scientific practices on gender issues in research.
- The challenges of developing countries, particularly African countries, in terms of open science.
- The effects of the pandemic on the adoption of open scientific practices, in comparison with the low degree of openness observed in sustainable development research practices.
- The perverse effects of the anglicization of research practices and the role of open science in promoting linguistic diversity in the production and dissemination of knowledge.
Knowledge mobilization
Beyond the new knowledge produced on open science as a social phenomenon, the Chair's activities will also aim to:
- Support the development of informed research policies following the principles of open science.
- Establish an infrastructure for measuring, analyzing and monitoring open science practices, based on open sources.
- Ensure the training of members of the scientific community in the forms taken by open science and in the individual and collective advantages of adopting these practices.
- Contribute to the transfer of knowledge associated with the establishment of non-commercial infrastructures enabling open science.
